kNOw Hunger: A Curriculum to Help End Hunger in Our Nation

"I was in a place for six incredible years, where winning meant a slice of bread and living another day."

Gerda Weissmann Klein,, Holocaust survivor and hunger activist

kNOw Hunger is designed to inspire you and your students to channel your energy, compassion and knowledge into action that will help eliminate hunger in our nation. Each unit explores a different aspect of hunger in America. As students work through each of the units, they acquire another piece of the "hunger puzzle," equipping them with the knowledge and understanding to take action steps for developing a culminating class anti-hunger action plan. kNOw Hunger was inspired by the life of Holocaust survivor and hunger activist Gerda Weissmann Klein. The Gerda and Kurt Klein Foundation creates opportunities for young people to understand injustice in the world and to translate that understanding into concrete, positive action. The Foundation promotes tolerance, respect for others and the empowerment of students through education andcommunity service.
Here's what Dr. J. Larry Brown, leading domestic hunger expert, says about kNOw Hunger… "At last, a compelling social content curriculum that meets approved educational standards! The curriculum gives students a way to understand and address hunger in their communities, their state and the nation. It facilitates knowledge about the extent and causes of hunger in the United States, its link to poverty and income disparities, and enables students to act on what they learn." (2002) Dr. J. Larry Brown, Director, Center on Hunger and Poverty, Brandeis University
